Saint-Ouen, on the northern edge of Paris, 1920. The club there was founded by a Frenchman who had learned the game in England, and it belonged to its neighbourhood in the way the great industrial clubs of northern England belonged to theirs — a factory-district side, in a factory district, playing for people who worked six days and watched on the seventh. This is the first full season after the war, and half the faces in the photograph had been in it. French football’s heartland was never the boulevards. It was the ring of workshops around them.
