A letterpress match bill for a fixture at Sarreguemines on the 21st of November, 1921, printed by a local jobbing shop in the Moselle — a region that had been German until three years earlier and was learning to be French again, in French, on a poster advertising an English game. The typography is the whole pleasure: the fat wood-letter GRAND MATCH, the hierarchy of sizes doing the work an image would do now, the exclamation marks earned. The Bibliothèque nationale scanned it at close to thirteen thousand pixels. A poster is a hierarchy of shouts, arranged by someone with a good ear.
