A second view of the 9th of June, 1924, taken from the terrace side of Colombes with the crowd banked behind. What the European press wrote about afterwards was not the scoreline but the manner: a short passing game played at speed with the ball kept on the floor, executed by players who had learned it in a country where the sport had been organised for barely thirty years. The French papers called it a revelation and meant it literally. Everything the next fifty years of European coaching argued about was on this pitch. They came to win a tournament and left having changed the subject.
