The 20th of May, 1923, at the Stade Bergeyre: a Turin club against a Paris one. Italy had taken to the game with a seriousness that unsettled its neighbours, and by the early twenties its clubs toured as a demonstration of what organised, salaried, systematically coached football looked like. France was still largely amateur and knew it. Fixtures like this were how the gap got measured, and measuring the gap is how it closes. The Agence Rol plate catches a crowd that came specifically to see how far behind they were. Nothing improves a league like a visitor who is plainly better.
