A large 1889 color lithograph (72 × 57 cm) titled simply 'Bock' — a stock advertising print a tavern could display for the springtime bock-beer season. Emblematic of the pre-Prohibition bock-poster genre that vanished when National Prohibition ended American brewing in 1920; no individual brewery is attached to it. The reduction of an entire seasonal ritual to a single word and a goat — the whole genre distilled to its irreducible signal. The season it announced still comes. The poster is all that waits for it.
