An 1880 chromolithographed bock-beer advertisement for the Baltimore brewer F. Klemm, digitized at very high resolution by the Library of Congress. Klemm's was one of the many small German-American Baltimore breweries of the 1870s–80s that vanished; the city's brewing trade was ended entirely by National Prohibition in 1920. The bock goat rendered in full chromolithographic bloom — this is the seasonal advertising vocabulary at its 1880s peak. A small house, gone without a trace but this sheet.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
