An 1895 bock-beer advertisement — a ram's head above an American flag — lithographed by the Heinicke-Fiegel Lithograph Company for the Wainwright Brewery of St. Louis. The Wainwright brewery was folded into the English-syndicate St. Louis Brewing Association in 1889 and, like the rest of the city's trade, was ended by National Prohibition in 1920. The ram and the flag together — seasonal bock symbol wrapped in national iconography, selling a local beer as an American institution. It was already someone else's by the time this ran. The name outlived the ownership only on paper.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
